Do you know of a tree in the Crowborough area that needs protection? If so, there’s a new and easier way to apply for an official order.
Wealden District Council has written to all its local communities to publicise the new way of applying for a Tree Preservation Order via its website.
A spokesperson said: “TPOs are a vital tool to protect trees that make a significant contribution to the local area. Once a TPO is in place, it is illegal to cut down, prune, or damage the tree without the council’s consent.”
Cllr Martyn Everitt, councillor for St Johns Crowborough, welcomed the new TPO process. He added: In Crowborough we have many trees and woodland that is important to preserve, and most do not have a TPO.”
A tree qualifies for a Tree Preservation Order if it meets criteria for significant amenity value, which includes its visibility to the public, its size, form, rarity, and screening value. Other factors like its historical, cultural, or ecological significance also increase its importance.
