The Garden of Remembrance was the setting this morning (Friday, 15 August) for a poignant service commemorating the 80th anniversary of VJ-Day (Victory over Japan) and the end of the Second World War.
A large crowd gathered from 11:40am, with the Town Mayor, Cllr. Natalie Whittle, welcoming attendees at 11:55am. Her address recalled the historic events of August 1945, followed by a reading from David Harris reflecting on the sacrifice, resilience, and courage of those who served.
The ceremony featured The Last Post, participating in the national two minutes’ silence, the laying of wreaths, the Kohima Epitaph, the National Anthem, and a retiring prayer. Wreaths were placed before the Union Flag-draped table before being moved to the War Memorial.
Organised by the Crowborough & District Veterans’ Support Association, the event drew an excellent turnout, with residents, veterans, and civic leaders united in remembrance and gratitude for those who secured peace and freedom.
