On Thursday, 8 May, 1945, the war in Europe finally came to end. Following years of fighting and destruction which left millions dead, mourning and displaced, peace was celebrated.
This 8 May marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Crowborough Town Council will be bringing the community together to mark this historic occasion with a celebration event taking place from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Goldsmiths Recreation ground.
This free event will bring the community together to celebrate the occasion but also reflect on the cost of victory.
It promises to give residents an opportunity to find out more about the history of the time, get involved with some singing and dancing from the era, enjoy some food and entertainment as well as pay tribute to the millions that paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting and securing the freedom we all enjoy today.
The event will close with the lighting of the Crowborough beacon in line with the lighting of beacons across the rest of the UK at 9.30pm which will be followed by singing the National Anthem.
