The town council says it has been “overwhelmed” with the positive response of the Crowborough community in the wake of the crash which seriously damaged the war memorial.
It says it is working to ensure the memorial is permanently repaired as quickly as possible and now hopes the repairs can be completed just in time for the Remembrance Sunday (8 November) and Armistice Day (11 November) services.
One of the end pillars of the war memorial in Church Road was demolished in the crash which happened earlier this month. Fortunately, the panels containing the names of service people were not damaged. A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving.
A spokesperson for the council said: “The council is heartened with how Crowborough has come together in response to the incident. Local companies have offered their help with the repair, and the amazing local volunteer group, the Sewing Crow-Bees & Yarn Bombers have jumped into action.”
The group is creating a ‘Poppy Veil’ made from hundreds of individual poppies which will be joined together to create a respectful cascade over the damaged section.
High Broom Care Home, a certified Veteran Friendly home in Crowborough has asked whether the Council would be willing to accept a small donation towards the restoration and repair of the War Memorial. The council has suggested that the care home donate to the Sewing Crow-Bees & Yarn Bombers which they were delighted to do.
