Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just a gentle ambler, Hospice in the Weald needs you!
The charity, which provides free of charge to patients with a terminal illness in West Kent and northern East Sussex, is urging people to sign up for its annual fund-raising run.
The event, a key fund-raiser for the hospice and now in its 19th year, takes place on 21 September on the Lower Cricket Ground in Tunbridge Wells. Last year’s event saw more than 1,000 people taking part, raising more than £77,000.
And it involves categories for “athletes” of all ages and abilities. Firstly there’s a Family Fun Run with a “hospice heroes” theme. Children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite super hero as they dodge the water. Then there’s the 5k, and the 10k for runners who like more of a challenge that takes in some of the Tunbridge Wells landmarks. Finally, there’s the more challenging half-marathon.
Among those already signed up to take part is eight-year-old Vinnie, who will take on his very first 5K in memory of his nanny, who he lost at the Hospice when he was just a baby. Although too young to remember his nanny, but he visits the Pembury hospice often, always lighting a candle in her memory.
To help other families going through similar experiences, Vinnie decided to start fundraising. Inspired by a family friend, Micky, who ran the Paddock Wood Half Marathon, Vinnie set himself the challenge of running a mile. Having achieved that, he has now set his fundraising sights on the 5k.
A spokesperson for Hospice in the Weald urged everyone to sign up to join in what is always an amazing day. “The day is about more than just walking or running – there is an amazing event atmosphere, with live music to provide motivation. And it’s so much more than a race — it’s a moment to honour, reflect, and remember. Every runner has their own reason for taking part, and we’ll be marking a special moment during the event to collectively remember those we’ve lost.”
