After weeks of a speed restriction on the road between Crowborough and Eridge major resurfacing work is set to begin this month and will mean overnight closures.
East Sussex County Council said the temporary 40mph limit on the A26 between Boarshead and Eridge was necessary after the road surface deteriorated in the bad weather.
The work is scheduled to take almost three weeks place from 4 May to 22 May and will mean the road will be closed from 8pm to 6am each day. Diversions will be in place.
The East Sussex Highways map shows the work will include the road from the middle of Eridge close to the entrance of the Eridge Estate, the length of the road to just beyond Sandhill Lane – the turning to Bowles.
The East Sussex County Council Highways contractor, Balfour Beatty has issued the following notice:
“Balfour Beatty is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council to manage the highways service across East Sussex. As part of this, we will be carrying out carriageway works on the A26, Eridge Road, Eridge Green. This includes resurfacing, patching repairs, ironwork adjustments, gully cleaning, adding high friction surfacing (HFS) and refreshing the road markings.
“Works will be carried out from Monday 4 May to Friday 22 May 2026, 8pm – 6am, weeknights only. We will inform you of any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.
“We will be working from Eridge Green Church bus stop to approximately 75 metres south of Sandhill Lane. The road will be closed to traffic while we are working, with a signed diversion route in place via the A26, Bunny Lane, A267, A22 and A26, and vice versa.
“For safety, access to properties within the works area will need to be limited and managed during our working hours. If you need access, please speak to the team on site, as arrangements and routes may change as work progresses.
“There could also be a delay while the area is made safe for you to pass, and your vehicle may be escorted by site marshalls. This is for properties with direct access within the closure area only and there will be no through route. Please be polite and respectful to the site teams, they are working to keep everyone safe. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.”

Public Transport: We are working collaboratively with local bus services on this scheme, please check with your service provider for the latest updates.
Parking: If required, we will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.
Weather: All of these works are subject to favourable weather conditions, for example heavy rain may affect the progress of the works.
Properties close to the carriageway may experience a temporary disturbance as this can be a noisy process and those properties may experience flashing lights and reversing sirens.
