Police were called to Crowborough in the early hours of Saturday morning (8 August) after reports of a large number of cars speeding, racing and making loud noise.

Numerous residents took to social media to express their anger and frustration at the behaviour of the drivers who appeared to have met up in Farningham Road and were then driving at high speed around the town – including up and down Walshes Road.

One resident estimated there were as many as 200 vehicles, and another reported that Sussex Police had attended and had taken photographs of faces and number plates.

Crowborough News has asked Sussex Police for details of the incident, whether any arrests were made, and whether any further action will be taken.

These are just some of the comments taken from Facebook:

“If anyone catches the number plates of the antisocial cars doing laps of Crowborough at 1am tonight, please report them to operation crackdown. It’s been going on for an hour now and I would quite like some sleep before starting my shift in ICU in a few hours.”

“999 were called and were there within minutes. Photos of number plates and faces as they exited the train station were taken.”

“There were probably over 200+ cars that ended up driving down Farningham road this morning in a convoy to park up towards the end by the skip to drift etc.”

“Police got all number plates and photos of those driving. There’s only one way out of Farningham Road! Idiots!”

“Yes I heard it. The speeds and the noise was outrageous.”

“I’m off Walshes road and could hear them too! I thought they was doing laps.”

“They were up and down Walshes Road last night, was very loud. I’m hoping the craters ruined their suspension.”

Another post suggested it was part of an on-going problem: “It’s constant I’m down Western Road, Crowborough Hill end and the amount of speeding vehicles be it cars or motor bikes that race around up Rotherfield Road it’s horrendous. My poor dog is driven crazy by the noise.”
