Crowborough firefighters have been called in to help colleagues in Eastbourne tackle a wild fire for the second time in a matter of days.
The large field fire at Stone Cross last night (Tuesday, 14 July) was the second time since the weekend Crowborough’s off-road firefighting team has been called in help.
Around 50 metres of grass was found to be well alight when firefighters arrived and as well as the crew from Crowborough, fire engines from Eastbourne, Hailsham, and Seaford attended the incident shortly after 11pm.
The fire service said firefighters made steady progress in extinguishing the blaze and crews used hose reel jets and fire beaters to bring the fire under control. Residents were advised to avoid the area while emergency services dealt with the incident and were also urged to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution due to smoke.
The flames were extinguished and crews left the scene by 1.30am. There were no reports of any injuries, and the cause of the fire is to be investigated.
The blaze came just three days after the Crowborough off-road crew helped Eastbourne put out a large fire in the open on the South Downs between Butts Brow and Eastbourne Downs Golf Club, off East Dean Road.
